Self-driving tours around Sichuan – The Three Kingdoms Culture Loop

Self-driving tours have been gaining popularity among Chinese tourists in recent years. One of the popular places for self-driving tours in China is Sichuan, as the province boasts rich tourism resources. China.org.cn has compiled information about some of the best routes for self-driving tours in Sichuan. Here are one of them:

The Three Kingdoms Culture Loop

The route boasts both natural and cultural sights. The Jianmen section of the ancient Shu Roads, along which today's Chengdu-Mianyang-Guangyuan Highway runs, was the only passage into and out of Sichuan and Shaanxi for hundreds of years. The Mingyue Gorge, the Cuiyun Corridor, the Jianmen Pass and the Langzhong Ancient City along the section are famous for breath-taking precipices, skyscraping ancient cypresses, ease of defense, and great cultural and historical importance respectively.

Best time for the tour:All year round

Day 1: Chengdu City-Luojiang County-Mianshan City

Itinerary:

It takes about 1.5 hours to drive from Chengdu to Luojiang and only half an hour from Luojiang to Mianyang.

Highlights:

Temple of Marquis Wu: Situated on the southern outskirts of Chengdu, the Temple of Marquis Wu is dedicated to Zhuge Liang, a chancellor of the State of Shu-Han during the Three Kingdoms period. First built in the sixth century, the temple was incorporated into Zhaolie Temple, the temple for Liu Bei, Emperor of the State of Shu-Han, at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty. Thus Zhaolie Temple is the only temple in China dedicated to both an emperor and his minister. It is also the most reputable memorial site for the history and culture of the Three Kingdoms period both in China and in the world.

Pang Tong Temple: Located in Luojiang county, Deyang City, the temple is the burial site of Pang Tong, a military counselor of Liu Bei, Emperor of the State of Shu-Han during the Three Kingdoms period.

Mount Fule: Mount Fule has been developed into a scenic area featuring a layout typical of classical Chinese gardens and culture of the Three Kingdoms period.

Day 2:
Mianyang City-Guangyuan City

Highlights:

Jianmen Pass: It is known in the world as an extremely difficult barrier to pass through. "Walking on the narrow paths of Shu Kingdom is more difficult than climbing up to Heaven!, " a line by Li Bai, an eminent poet of the Tang Dynasty about the Jianmen Pass, shows vividly how difficult it was to walk through the pass.

Cuiyun Corridor: Cuiyun Corridor is also called the Corridor of Royal Cypresses, because its is lined up by nearly 10,000 lush cypresses planted during the Qin Dynasty on both sides. As a section on the Shu Roads, the corridor is so far the oldest and best-preserved ancient land transportation route in the world and thus reputed as the No. 1 Ancient Road in the World and a living fossil of land transportation.

Zhaohua Ancient Town: The town has a history of 4000 years and is still in a good condition. There are many streets and folk residences from the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Dachao Post House: Dacao Post House was a post house on the Ancient Shu Roads where Robin Hood and his men in the Green Woods loved to dine and drink to their heart's content.

Mingyue Gorge: Located in Guangyuan City, Mingyue Gorge is an important part of the Jianmen section of the Ancient Shu Roads. The most marvelous thing about the Gorge is the plank road built along the face of the cliff near the river in the pre-Qin Dynasty period.

Day 3:
Guangyuan City-Langzhong City

Itinerary:

It takes about 3.5 hours to drive from Guangyuan to Langzhong

Highlights:

Langzhong Ancient City: With a history of 2300 years, the ancient city still keeps its original appearance with more than 200 scenic spots and historic sites.

Tiangongyuan Temple in Langzhong: The temple was built in memory of Yuan Tiangang and Li Chunfeng, two astronomers of the Tang Dynasty.

Day 4:
Langzhong City-Nanchong City-Suining City-Chengdu City

Itinerary:

Take the G212 national way and its costs about two hours to go from Langzhong to Nanchong. Take the G42 Highway to go from Nanchong to Chengdu and it costs about 2.5 hours.

Highlights:

Xishan Mountain Scenic Area: It is a famous scenic area in Nanchong. The former residence of Chen Shou, author of The History of the Three Kingdoms, is located here.

The Chinese Dead Sea: It is a underground salt lake formed 150 million years ago. The lake is a good place to escape from the summer heat as people can easily float on it.

Song Dynasty Porcelain Museum: It is the only Chinese museum exclusive for Song Dynasty porcelain wares. Exhibits are mostly quality porcelain wares from famous kilns of the Song Dynasty.

The most precious of all is a jar with lotus leaf-shaped lid from the Longquan Kiln of the Song Dynasty.
