International Kites Festival Opens in East China

(CRI) The 32nd Weifang International Kites Festival has kicked off in east China's Shandong Province.

The festival has attracted kite flying enthusiasts from around the world to the Weifang city.

Colorful kites of all sizes and variations filled the sky on the festival's opening day.

Tu Kuang-hua, deputy director of the Macao Hippo Kite Team, says his kites represent freedom and happiness.

"My kites are from my hippo family. The design represents a harmonious family with a papa, mama and children. With the harmonious spirit the kites carry, I hope to express freedom and happiness in the sky. I hope every part of the world can see the long history of Chinese kites."

The city of Weifang is believed to be the home of kites. The history of kites there has also won admiration from foreign visitors.

A tourist from the United States expressed his enthusiasm for kites and the festival.

"Great, fabulously great. I love the kites. We went to the kite museum yesterday. Terrific museum.

Today, seeing all these kites. How can you not love it? It's just great. It's so interesting seeing all the different kinds of kites and seeing all the people out here flying their kites here. It's a wonderful thing. I love it."

A total of 30 kite flying teams from 67 countries and regions will participate in today's 11th World Kite Championship.

The weekend's activity is expected to attract around 100-thousand kite enthusiasts for the feast.
