Train ride vacations can be a wonderful way to really experience a country and its people. Going by train can be fun and relaxing and avoids many of the stresses and delays associated with air travel. There are many train journeys around the world that are worth taking for the scenery alone and sitting on a train allows you to immerse yourself in the scenery and culture of the country. Train vacations can be as luxurious as you want them to be and even though the Golden Age of rail travel is long gone, trains can still evoke a world of glamor and excitement.
The world's most famous train, the Orient Express can still take you in the lap of luxury from London to Venice or Istanbul, although it is not the only luxury train option. So-called luxury trains operate in India, the UK, Australia and the United States and many other countries, with stops allowing you to sight see without constantly packing and unpacking. The US even has its own version of the Orient Express, which travels through some of the most spectacular National Parks of the Southwest.
Although not luxurious, the world's longest train journey is still the adventure of a lifetime. The Trans-Siberian Railway connects Moscow with Vladivostok, crossing seven time zones. To travel its entire length will take a week, although it can be broken up into smaller sections and you can break your journey long the route. Two other classic long train journeys are the Indian Pacific across Australia and the Canadian which crosses Canada from Vancouver to Toronto.
If you have plenty of time on your hands, many countries, including the United States, issue train passes which allow unlimited rail travel during a certain amount of time. Many college students, as well as an increasing number of older people, choose to see Europe this way and there are various passes available, depending on how much time you have and which countries you want to visit.
Train travel in Europe is fast and efficient and the relatively small distances between cities make it a more practical option than flying. Most long distance trains in Europe offer comfortable and reasonably priced sleeping accommodation, allowing you to save both time and money by sleeping on the train. Most European railway stations are in the heart of the city and have everything the traveler needs – tourist information, left luggage and a room finding service.
