Taiwan now has a visa-waiver deal with Paraguay: Tsai

(China Post) Taiwan has signed a reciprocal visa-waiver agreement with Paraguay that is effective immediately, President Tsai Ing-wen announced Wednesday.

Paraguayan leader Horacio Cartes had signed an executive order approving visa-free entry for R.O.C. passport holders before he arrived here Tuesday on a three-day state visit, Tsai said.

Paraguay is an important friend for Taiwan that has spoken up for the nation against the unfair treatment it has received recently in the international community, she said.

The president welcomed her Paraguayan counterpart with military honors at a ceremony Wednesday, including a 21-gun salute. Cartes' visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of bilateral ties between the two nations.

Cartes' visit offers an important boost to Taiwan as it faces an increasingly challenging diplomatic situation.

Panama, one of Taiwan's most important allies, severed its relations with the nation last month. The Foreign Ministry also reported around the same time that five nations were under pressure from Beijing to force Taiwan's representative offices to change their names.
