Over 6,000 Trapped Tourists Evacuted from Weizhou Island in Guangxi

(CRI) Over 6,000 tourists are currently being rescued after becoming stranded for three days in Weizhou on Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Island due to bad weather.

The tourists were evacuated by ferries sent by a tourist company from the Beibu gulf at around 2pm.

The bad weather was influenced by the monsoon season which has caused big waves and rain showers around the sea area near Weizhou Island.

Over 1000 tourists have now safely reached Beihai city in Guangxi Province and another three ferries will continue to evacuate the remaining stranded tourists.

Since July 22, the price of food and hotels has risen dramatically. With only two Credit Cooperatives on the island, many tourists have now run out of cash.

Many tourists have borrowed cash from locals and then transferred the money back to them through a third party payment such as Wechat or Alipay.
