Beijing to Introduce Departure Tax Refund Policy This Year

(CRI) Beijing is going to introduce a tax refund policy for foreign tourists this year to promote the development of the domestic tourism market.

According to guidelines from the Ministry of Finance, foreign visitors who spend 500 yuan or 80 U.S. dollars or more at a designated shop will be able to apply for a refund equivalent to 11 percent of the amount spent.

The goods must not be used before applying for the refund.

The application should be submitted within 90 days of purchase.

Beijing vice Mayor Cheng Hong says the departure tax rebate policy can reduce shopping costs and help boost the spending capacity of international tourists.

Currently, only Hainan Province has adopted such a tax rebate program, where it's been in place since 2011.
