According to Chinese state rail operators, the sleeper trains will be operated on the Beijing-Guangzhou, Beijing-Shenzhen, Shanghai-Guangzhou and Shanghai-Shenzhen routes.
The 16-car service includes 110 second-class seats and 510 beds in sleeper cabins. Rail officials in Beijing said the services that departed from the Chinese capital on the first day were 70% full.
There are 10 sleeper cabins in each car. Each cabin has four beds, which are 10 centimeters wider and more comfortable than the beds on regular trains, the newspaper reported.
Each bed has a power socket and an LCD screen that features pre-recorded programs. The passengers also have access to shared facilities, including a kettle.
There is also a dining car on each service, which is open throughout the 11-hour, 2,400-kilometer journey between Beijing and Shenzhen. Passengers traveling in the sleeper cabin receive a free meal that includes sandwiches, snacks and instant coffee and tea.
Rail officials said that the staff on board offer a tea service.
A passenger on the maiden service, surnamed Chen, who was traveling with her 5-year-old child to visit her husband in Shenzhen, said that she travels to the south four to five times a year. She said that she would book the sleeper service again because of the comfort it affords.
