New Airport Approved to be Built in Beijing

(CRI) China's top economic planner has finally approved the construction of a new airport in south Beijing, to ease the traffic pressure on Beijing Capital International Airport.

The airport will be built in Beijing's suburban Daxing district, which is 46 kilometers from the city center.

Zhang Guohua is the Dean of the Institute of Comprehensive Transportation Research with the National Development and Reform Commission.

"According to recent planning, the new airport is a little smaller than the old one. But considering its long-term development, its size will be bigger than the old one, since it's far from the city center.

Based on the experiences of foreign airports, this airport will be built mainly for international flights, but will also take domestic flights into account."

The new airport will be able to accommodate take-offs and landings of four-engined long-haul wide-body airliners like Airbus A380.

It is expected to be completed and put into use in 2019, with a total investment of 80 billion yuan or nearly 13 billion US dollars.
