There is a little bit of kid in all of us, and train tours or train rides are great fun for the entire family. The great thing about train rides is that you can use them as a major part of your vacation or just use them for a short side trip. Either way, just sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery without the worry of driving. There are train rides available throughout the world, but in this article we will focus on some of the top train rides in the northeast United States.

Cape Cod Central Railroad (Massachusetts) – Most trains depart from the Hyannis Station. They offer a variety of train rides including an award winning Elegant Dinner Train, Luncheon Trains, Sunday Brunch Train, and Family Supper Train tours. They also offer a very popular narrated Scenic Excursion Train ride. Most of their train tours are about a 2-3 hour trip.

Conway Scenic Railroad (New Hampshire) – All trains depart from the historic station on Schouler Park in the quaint village of North Conway. They offer two train rides: the "Notch Train" and the "Valley Train." Enjoy the scenery of the Mount Washington Valley and the surrounding White Mountains as you travel roundtrip from historic North Conway on the Valley Train. The Notch Train is a longer ride and takes you through Crawford Notch. This ride is well known for its spectacular scenery as you travel past scenic bluffs, steep ravines, and beautiful mountain vistas, and across the Frankenstein Trestle and Willey Brook Bridge.

Mount Washington Cog Railway (New Hampshire) – Located at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire the Cog Railway was an engineering marvel when it was first built. The 3-hour round-trip ride goes straight to the top of Mount Washington, offering spectacular views along the way. On the summit, visit New Hampshire's mile-high state park and the Mount Washington Observatory Center and Museum.

Hobo Railroad (New Hampshire) – Located at Lincoln, New Hampshire this train ride runs through the heart of the White Mountains near Loon Mountain Ski Area and travels through the White Mountain National Forest.

Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad (New Hampshire) – This train travels from Meredith to Weirs Beach and goes past Lake Winnipesaukee. Both the Hobo Railroad and Winnipesaukee Railroad offer excellent opportunities for viewing beautiful fall foliage.

Green Mountain Railroad (Vermont) – They offer several different train rides. The Green Mountain Flyer travels from Bellows Falls to Chester Depot. The Champlain Valley Flyer travels from Burlington to Charlotte. The White Valley Flyer travels from White River Junction to Thetford. In addition to these, they offer a number of special excursion train tours.

Whether its riding a modern train to tour all across the country or boarding a vintage steam engine for a short excursion, you and your family will have a great time.
