Some Facts About Trains in the 19th and the 20th Century

The history of trains is an amazing one and it is closely related to the economical frames of the last centuries. Before becoming the comfortable means of transport that they are today, trains were mainly use for economical purposes, such as a way of transporting supplies or raw goods.

Now, trains are mainly about passengers, but this situation is a matter of the 20th century mainly. In past centuries, the trains were not exactly what they are today.

The birth of the railway occurred in England, and this was not surprising since England was beginning to be highly industrialized. Of course, the trains looked differently from the technologies that we know today and there were no regular services for passengers. However, somewhere at the later half of the 19th century, the promoters of railway transport, who were mainly interested in the traffic of goods, discovered to their amazement that the traffic of passengers can be extremely rewarding. Thus, the success they had in Manchester and Liverpool influenced the future development of the railway not only in Britain, but abroad as well.

The lines were short and it took some decades before making them longer and covering more and more distances. In the same century, the railway for passengers developed in Russia and in the United States, and the phenomenon soon covered the entire world. Trains became more and more rapid and numerous and the train was a main way of transport for longer distances until the 20th century.

The 20th century was the century of revolution when speaking about the means of transport. It was the century of the plane that is currently used as the main mean of transport when it comes to long distances.

The train is still highly used in the 20th century and it was a very useful means of transport during the two World Wars. In time, the old locomotives were replaced with Diesel ones. They are more efficient, cleaner and they definitely require less maintenance than the old types of steam locomotives.

At the end of the 20th century, high-speed trains appeared in the majority of countries around the world. Currently, there are high speed trains in UK, United States, China, Italy, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Spain and many more other countries. Trains are thus still important ways of transport even in our modern times.
