ESL Jobs – How to Teach English in Foreign Countries and Travel Through Asia As an English Teacher

Teaching in a foreign country can be a great way for anyone to travel and work at the same time. You can immerse yourself in the local culture by being involved in an overseas school and it's social network. You get paid to live in another country and for the term of your contract you may be offered accommodation. The contracts usually run for a year, but sometimes, six month contracts are available. The requirements to be able to teach in a foreign country can vary, so you need to decide which country you would like to spend a year in, and then seek out an English Language School or placement agency who will provide you with the information on visa requirements, qualification levels and relevant experience. If you are wanting to teach English overseas then the main requirement is a bachelor degree. This can be in any discipline but of course, if your degree is in English or Education then you will be given preference. Graduates from around the world use their completed degrees in any discipline to obtain employment in countries such as Japan, Brazil and China and Korea. Often through the placement agency, you are given the opportunity to obtain certification to teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), which is another great thing to add to your resume. Some schools require that you have ESL / TEFL / TESL certification before you begin, while others are satisfied with a bachelor degree. If you would like to teach other subjects overseas, then you are usually required to have a bachelor degree in Education and demonstrated school teaching experience in your specialty subject (for example Mathematics or Science). Placement agencies are available to assist in finding teaching roles in your chosen country. These agencies will provide you with the additional information you need to ensure you get a great job. Another thing to consider in your search for an overseas teaching role is what sort of school you wish to work for. Will you feel comfortable teaching young children or adults? Teaching children can be hard work but the hours will be during the day and the teaching will involve play based learning. Teaching adults English is often done in the evenings and on weekends which would free you up to travel and explore during the day. Adult classes are often more structured and they will expect that you have an understanding and can explain the structure of the English language. Teaching in another country can be immensely rewarding where you will be engaging with the locals and finding out so much more about this country than if you had just flown in as a short term tourist.
