Chinese Tourists’ Top 10 Destinations

China is now the world's fourth-largest outbound travel market and a beam of light for many countries' sluggish travel industry.

So where exactly do 1.3 billion mainlanders dream about taking that perfect holiday?

Qunar.com, China's biggest travel website, provided a roundup of mainlanders' traveling and hotel booking habits in a report released last week. The report is based on the site's 51 million monthly search results from January to August this year.

According to Qunar's database, Hong Kong and Taiwan are the two most popular destinations for Chinese tourists.

Hong Kong

Mainlanders cited four main reasons for their preferences: no language barrier, geographically closer, abundant shopping and excellent food. The two Chinese-speaking destinations were followed by the Maldives, where Chinese newlyweds love to honeymoon.

Mainland travelers touring Hong Kong spend around 35 percent of their total budget on shopping; and more than 60 percent of them travel with their families.

Tsim Sha Tsui, Causeway Bay and Mong Kok were the top three hotel search words.

Apart from Pearl River Delta residents, Shanghainese travelers make up the largest visitor segment in Hong Kong, accounting for 12.41 percent of the tourists from mainland.

Self-guided tours to Hong Kong were opened up to people from Guangdong Province and most first- and second-tier Chinese cities in January 2007.

Residents of Shanghai, Beijing and Xiamen have also been permitted to travel to Taiwan on their own since July 2011.

Below is a list of the 10 most popular overseas destinations for mainland tourists according to Qunar's report.

  1. Hong Kong
  2. Taiwan
  3. The Maldives
  4. Singapore
  5. Dubai
  6. Bali
  7. Macau
  8. Paris
  9. Seoul
  10. Sydney

Launched in May 2005, Qunar claims to attract 45 million unique visitors a month. China's most popular search engine Baidu has invested a total of US$306 million in Qunar.com, thereby becoming its biggest shareholder.
