The Best Time of Year to Travel to Beijing

Beijing, the busy metropolitan capital city of China, is host to millions of tourists throughout the year. Visiting in any given city will afford a tourist many different amusement and attraction options. The question, then, is what is the best time to travel to Beijing? Well, that really depends on what you want to do in Beijing. The city has endless opportunity and all seasons provide a different scope of things to do and conditions to bear.

Spring in Beijing is marked by temperatures in the 55-60 degree Fahrenheit range; spring is known for being windy and dry in Beijing. Temperatures may drop suddenly in the early spring months and sandstorms are frequent. The spring weather means fewer tourists; so, for those who do not like the crowds, this is the best time to visit. Activities that will please visitors in the spring include: visiting the Beijing Arboretum for natural wooded scenery, visiting Behai Park, which has a thousand-year history, and stopping by the Blossom Festival of Yuyauntan Park.

Summer is considered peak season in Beijing; the best weather can be found in the summer, but so can the biggest crowds. Summer lasts from June to August and is characterized by temperatures in the seventies and eighties (degrees Fahrenheit). Summer is a rainy time in China; more than two-thirds of the city's expected rainfall each year falls in the summer months. Fun summer activities include visiting Ling Mountain, which is the best peak in the Beijing area. It is known for a variety of flora. In July and August, make sure to attend the Tibet Festival. For spectacular natural splendor, including several waterfalls, visit Refreshing Valley.

Fall in Beijing is another gorgeous time in the Chinese year. The sunshine is abundant and the temperatures are mild. Activities to participate in, in China, in the fall, include: picking vegetables and fruit at local orchards and farms, visiting Fragrant Hills Park, which is known for gorgeous autumn scenery, and visiting Yudu Mountain, another spot known for glorious fall beauty.

There are times when it is not a great idea to visit Beijing. During national holidays, the city is often packed. To avoid the jam, do not visit the city during the Chinese Spring Festival, which occurs in early February. International Labor Day, which occurs the first week in May, is another crowd-heavy event in Beijing. One last time to avoid is the first week in October, which is the week of National Day, another very populated time for Beijing. Unless you love the crowds or are going for those specific events, it is probably best to stay away.

It seems the answer to the question of what is the best time of year to visit Beijing is not straightforward. It really depends on the person answering the question for themselves. If you prefer cooler temperatures and beautiful scenery, visiting in the Autumn is the answer; if you like less crowded attractions and cooler temperatures and don't mind the wind, visit in the spring. Summer is popular, so only come in summer if you don't mind the crowds. No matter what your interests and desires, there is a season in Beijing for you!
