Last month China unveiled what it billed as the fastest rail link in the world.

October 26th 2010 was a historic day in Chinese history as China unveiled what it described as the World's Fastest Bullet Train. This train will connect two of the country's industrial hubs (Shanghai and Hangzhou) travelling at an average speed of 350 kilometers per hour.

The Rail link between Shanghai and Hangzhou, the latest addition to China's fast expanding HSR network that is already the world's largest rail network. The Bullet train covers the 200 km distance in only 45 minutes, reducing traveling time from 78 minutes.

China's initial high speed trains were imported or built under technology transfer agreements with foreign train-makers including Siemens, Alstom, Bombardier and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. However, CRH380 bullet train is completely home-built high speed train which has been recorded travelling at 420 kilometers per hour, a world record during a trial service. It will, however, travel between the two cities at less than full tilt, at an average speed of 350 Km per hour.

With generous funding from the Chinese government's economic stimulus program, of high-speed lines are now under construction. China's high-speed rail network now stretches over 7,431 Kilometers. The government plans to expand the network to over 16,000 kilometers by 2020.

Beijing has an ambitious rail development programme aimed at increasing the national network from the current 86,000 kilometres to 120,000 kilometres, making it the most extensive rail system outside the United States.

The Chinese government goal is to serve 90 percent of China's population by train.
