Named after Qinghai Lake, the largest inland salt - water lake in China, Qinghai Province is located in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in western China. Qinghai covers an area of 720,000 square kilometers (about 278,000 square miles), which makes it the fourth largest province in China. Its total population is some 5 million, among which Han, Tibetan, Tu, Hui, Salar and Mongolian minority ethnic groups are represented. On the early morning of April 14, 2010, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake and a series of strong aftershocks have hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture located in the southwest of Qinghai Province. The epicenter is in Yushu County, where thousands of houses collapsed, schools and streets were damaged badly. So far on April 21, over 2,000 people were killed and about 12,000 people were injured. Response to the shocking earthquake in Qinghai, the country's rescue and medical teams have already left for the disaster area promptly. An appeal is also made to the public to donate money or materials for victims in the earthquake.
