(China Plus) From today, residents from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan can apply for a resident permit for the Chinese mainland.
Residents from China's territories can apply for a mainland resident permit if they have lived on the mainland for at least six months, and either have a stable job or are studying. It takes 20 business days for an application to be processed.
The new rules aim to alleviate some of the inconveniences that people from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan encounter on the mainland, such as the need to provide local ID to purchase train tickets, check in at hotels, or use online financial services. Residents of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan with a mainland resident permit will also be allowed to register vehicles, apply for a driver's license, and sit exams for professional certifications.
