A newspaper report in China has revealed that one in four swimming pools in Beijing contains excessive levels of urea.
The South China Morning Post reports that 600 pools were inspected as part of the investigation, and that 77 have exceeded national standards for the last two years.
Those standards state that pool water should contain no more than 3.5 milligrams per litre of urea.
To most people, the news will simply confirm what they've long feared about swimming pools - and not just in China!
The publication Science News has written analysis that describes swimming pools as being 'like huge blue toilet bowls.'
Apparently, the average pool will contain urine, fecal matter, sweat and skin cells.
Most concerningly, the report states that urine in swimming pools reacts with chlorine in the water to form a highly toxic chemical called cyanogen chloride - which is classified as an agent of chemical warfare.
And, according to the Daily Mail, one in five adults admits to urinating in pools, with 70 percent failing to shower before swimming.
