Last year around 117 million tours abroad were made by Chinese travellers who spent in collective total around 104.5 million USD said a joint report by China Tourism Academy and Unionpay International on Thursday.
Each Chinese visitor spent on average 893 USD (6,000 yuan) during their travels abroad.
Although there was a continued increase in total trips abroad, the rate of the increase compared to previous years and the spending abroad have dropped in the last year. The report went on to say that Chinese tourists focus on the quality of the trip and consume more rationally.
Destinations in many countries embrace the increasing number of Chinese tourists by upgrading reception capacities, adding signs in Chinese, providing Chinese tour guides, serving Chinese food in local restaurants, and even starting to accept Unionpay bank cards.
The ease in visa rules has also contributed in attracting Chinese tourists.
In terms of tourist destinations, more than two thirds of out-bound travel destinations are Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
The top ten most popular countries for Chinese are Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, United States, Singapore, Russia, Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia respectively. For Chinese visitors to Japan and Thailand, the rate of increase reached 88%.
The report revealed that the major spendings for Chinese tourists aboard was on shopping, tourist group activities, food, and entry into major tourist locations.
