Best tourist spots for crowd-free May Day holiday snaps

1. Shangri-La Grand Canyon, Balagezong, Yunnan province

When talking about Shangri-La, people would think about the most well known Haba Snow Mountain, Potatso National Park, and the Meili Mountain. Every year, many tourists would flock to these attractions and this may have boosted local economic development but also made a negative impact on local ecological systems as well as natural beauty.

However, with less commercial development projects, Balagezong still keeps its original appearance.

It is called the last retreat away from the turmoil of the world in Shangri-La.

It only takes a three-hour drive from another tourist attraction, Lijiang of Yunnan province.

2. Xiaoqikong, Libo county, Guizhou province

The name of Xiaoqikong means "bridge with seven little arches". Miaowang City is famous for its eight-trigram-style landscape, mysterious valley, an underground arsenal which now has become fossilized, and its endless oceans of bamboo forest.

By visiting Miaowang City, you could also enjoy the unique culture of the Miao people. They are both romantic and courageous. The will sing you love songs with unique Miao characteristics, step on "mountains of blades", jump into "the ocean of fire", and you are welcome to dance with the Miao people.

It is very convenient for visitors to reach from Hunan, Sichuan provinces and Chongqing by driving, buses or rail.

4. Songping Valley, Sichuan province

Located between Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou (Jiuzhai Valley), Songping Valley is more like an unspoilt mountain haven in West China. It only has a reputation among local residents. The scenic spot of
Songping Valley is famous for its forest, mountains as well as local folk culture.

It is also laid within the central area of the Qiang ethnic group culture. Qiang Diao architecture is a characteristic of the Qiang people. The buildings look like stone fortresses, and the ground floors are full of stalls and storerooms. The cuisine here is also very special. Staple foods include corn, wheat, potatoes, beef, mutton, pork, chicken and fish. The Qiang ferment and drink wine. Children and women prefer to drink wine with honey; men tend to have a great capacity for liquor. They are also expert at preparing medicinal dishes.

Driving from Chengdu to Songping Valley is very convenient. It only takes 2 to 3 hours.

5. Tongnan Chongkan Rose Garden, Chongqing

It is very easy to enjoy blossoms. But it is not that easy to find a place where you can pick flowers and make essential oil from it. The rose garden at Tongnan Chongbai of Chongqing has more than 2.5 million square meters of roses. It also has a 4,000-meter sightseeing road with Damascus Roses.

It offers opportunities to tourists to make rose essential oil with their own hands.

6. Yushan Island, Fujian province

The island is ideal for backpackers. It is not fully developed and hotels are not available, so most visitors camp out at night. Away from the mainland's pollution, the island is known for its natural beauty and views of the stars in the sky at night. Visitors can also go diving for mussels that are larger than a man's hand.

7. A'er Mountain, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region

Do you know where China's smallest city is? It is A'er Mountain where you could enjoy the beauty of four seasons. Located at the foot of southwest Daxing'anling Mountains in North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, A'er Mountain is famous for its mineral springs, abundant volcanic lakes, and beautiful forest. A'er Mountain means 'hot magic spring'.

Standing on the borderline between Mongolia and China, you could see the road and mountains in Mongolia, enjoy volcanoes and the lake around, and have the opportunity to see a "snow cloud" when you have the sun over your head but a cloud is snowing nearby.

Though it is said Nianbaoyuze has 360 lakes, the local tourism bureau and local Tibetans said they are mainly 16 large lakes and about 300 smaller lakes dotting the mountains. However, because 360 is a lucky number in Buddhism, the Tibetans believe there are 3,600 peaks and 360 lakes in Nianbaoyuze.

Nianbaoyuze is said to be the birthplace of the local Tibetans on the Golok Grassland.

For common visitors, the Fairy Lake is the most approachable. However, even to walk across two lakes takes at least one day.

9. Pingshan Canyon, Hefeng county, Hubei province

Hefeng county is one of the most poverty-stricken areas in China. It didn't connect with the outside world with railways, airports, ferries or even expressways, which kind of helped the place to keep its natural beauty.

Under the sunshine, tourists on a boat can see through to the bottom. It is so clear, that from the picture, you would say the boat is floating in the air.

The scenic spot of Pingshan Canyon is still under construction and doesn't connect with convenient transportation. If tourists want to explore this place, a local guide is needed.
