Travelers surge during China's National Day holiday

(Xinhua) About 526 million Chinese travelled during the week-long National Day holiday which ended on Wednesday, up 10.7 percent from the same period last year.

They contributed to 421 billion yuan (66.4 billion U.S. dollars) in tourism revenue, up 17.9 percent year on year, according the China National Tourism Administration.

The data was collected in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities on the Chinese mainland, during the holiday.

Among the tourists, 114 million spent at least one night at a hotel, up 14.7 percent year on year. 

About 412 million tourists had day trips, up 9.8 percent year on year.

The National Day holiday has become an annual tourism event for Chinese people, who are increasingly well-off and willing to spend more on leisure and entertainment. Self-driving travel, rural tourism and culture-oriented travel have become more popular.
