(WSJ) Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. said Monday it would add its first vessel custom-made to cater to the Chinese market in 2017.
The announcement was made by Chief Executive Frank Del Rio during the CruiseWorld China summit in Shanghai. The ship has been designed specifically for the unique accommodation, cuisine and onboard entertainment needs of Chinese clients, according to a statement from the cruise line.
The new ship will be the second of Norwegian Cruise Line's Breakaway Plus class and will have a capacity for 4,200 guests. The new ship will be delivered in the spring of 2017, with the first Breakaway Plus-class ship, Norwegian Escape, set to be delivered later this month.
To aid efforts to expand into the hotly sought-after Chinese market, the company has offices in Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai.
Shares of cruise-ship companies have notched double-digit percentage gains in their stock prices over the past year. The prospects of new routes to Cuba and nascent growth in China, where cruise lines are still making inroads, have also made the stocks more attractive, investors say.
Among other factors working in cruise operators' favor has been the yearlong tumble in energy prices.
