China's State Oceanic Administration has sent out an alert regarding algae bloom. An area of nearly 40,000 square meters of algae is approaching the shores of Shandong province in east China.
The green tides were first reported in Qingdao, coastal city of Shandong province in 2007. A contributing factor is the high supply of nutrients from agricultural runoff and wastewater.
This type of green algae, enteromorpha prolifera, is not toxic to people, but it can suck up huge amounts of oxygen, choking marine life. When it rots, it has a foul smell.
