Taiwan night markets to accept Chinese UnionPay cards

Chinese tourists in Taiwan will soon find another layer of convenience when a popular Taipei night market begins accepting UnionPay cards.

Ningxia Night Market, a favorite with Chinese visitors, will launch the service by late February, and other shopping areas like Qingguang and Shida are expected to follow.

Around 5 million people visit the Ningxia market in western Taipei each year, half of them being foreign tourists, with people from China occupying a large percentage, according t o Lin Ting-kuo, head of the Ningxia Night Market Tourism Association.

Allowing them to swipe their mainland Chinese bank cards rather than paying in cash could give a boost to Taiwan's 300 night markets, which Lin estimated represent business opportunities worth hundreds of billions of Taiwan new dollars based on average spending of NT$100-NT$200 (US$3-$6) per person.

"A new pay tool will definitely increase the business revenue for the shops," he said, adding that card transactions will help avoid issues of counterfeit money and customer disputes and can make daily accounting easier for vendors.

In the first stage, 15 shops and five vendors will join the program, and plans call for expanding to 25 shops and 180 vendors in the second stage.

Ningxia is collaborating with CTBC, a local financial giant, to lunch the mobile point-of-sale systems running on smartphones, tablets or dedicated wireless devices.

Even as Taiwan expects to see 10 million foreign visitors this year, Lin said his night market has not forgotten about local customers and has plans to implement EasyCard payments.
