China Begins 3-Day May Day Holiday

(CRI) Today marks the start of the 3-day May Day holiday in China, which is also this country's Labor Day.

The three-day holiday traditionally sees a peak in tourist numbers, as many people choose to travel domestically or abroad.

Chinese authorities are anticipating a similar trend this year.

An estimated 45 million passengers are expected to pack the Chinese rail system between Friday and Tuesday, which would be an annual increase of 10-percent.

Many train stations across China have their special service measures in-place to try to ease congestion.

Mobile taxi-hailing service Didi says compared with last year, passengers in first-tier Chinese cities booked 30-percent more rides on its platform on Friday evening.

Rides to airports and train stations saw an increase of some 80-percent.

To keep traffic moving, all toll-roads in China are free of charge for small vehicles until Tuesday.
